Ranked in the top 10 for business and economics in the UK by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021, the School of Economics at Surrey is offering an attractive doctoral program, similar in structure to top US Ph.D. programs. The MRes/Ph.D. Economics is designed for candidates with an outstanding background in Economics, typically already holding an MSc in the subject, who wish to engage in leading doctoral research in Economics.
The standard entry route to the Ph.D. program is through the MRes Economics program. The MRes provides cutting-edge training in micro, macro, econometrics, and research methods lasting one year and is, on successful completion, followed by the Ph.D. program, lasting three to four years during which students take advanced Ph.D. field courses and work on their research. A small number of places with direct entry into the Ph.D. program is reserved for applicants that hold a degree similar to the MRes. An attractive feature of the MRes/Ph.D. program at Surrey is the relatively small cohort size of the program.
Requirements
- An undergraduate degree with first-class honours in a relevant discipline
- A master’s degree in a relevant discipline (or equivalent qualifications).
- A minimum of two referees.

- A cover letter specifying motivation to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Surrey and highlighting broad research interests.
- A minimum of two referees should be provided with the application.
- IELTS Academic: 6.5 or above with a minimum of 6.0 in each component (or equivalent).
The start date is 1st October 2021. As part of the application assessment, applicants are usually invited for an interview.
