The Oleson Ecological Economics Lab is inviting applications for a Student/ Graduate Assistant in Natural Capital accounting. The student can pursue an MS or Ph.D., depending on interest and qualifications. The project focuses on coastal ecosystem accounting in the Main Hawaiian Islands, including the valuation of a diversity of ecosystem goods and services using a mix of market and non-market methods.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Graduate Assistant will support in compiling coastal natural capital accounts for the Main Hawaiian Islands. Initial duties include (but are not limited to) identifying, collecting, organizing, and reading literature on natural capital accounting, and ecosystem service modeling and valuation; compiling a database of applicable valuation studies and creating benefit transfer procedures; designing and implementing non-market valuation studies; spatial analysis of ecosystems, ecosystem conditions, and service values; and producing reports, manuscripts, and outreach materials. The selected Graduate Assistant is expected to perform other additional tasks as assigned. Duties also include collaborating and working with other researchers in an interdisciplinary environment.
Eligibility
- Admission to, or ongoing, graduate student at UH Manoa in NREM or directly related field of study
- BS in environmental science, economics, geography and/or related fields
- Excellent knowledge of GIS, and spatial modeling techniques
- Strong quantitative analysis skills, using R or similar programming language
- Experience in managing data
- Demonstrated team player, with ability to work independently
- Organized, with excellent communication skills
