The Department of Economics at the University of Montana is inviting applications for a postdoctoral researcher with environmental economics training and strong quantitative skills to join the multi-disciplinary Smart Fires project, under the supervision of Dr. Katrina Mullan. Smart Fires engages social scientists, computer scientists, forest and wildland fire scientists and optical engineers from multiple campuses across Montana to address knowledge gaps relating to the social and physical impacts of using prescribed fire as a strategy for mitigating wildfire risk in the Western US. The postdoctoral researcher will join the Social Psychology, Economics and Ethics team to study the effects of prescribed fire and wildfire on individuals and communities; the potential for adaptive responses to reduce the negative consequences of fire and smoke; and the role of information in supporting adaptation.

The position is full time, with a salary of $55,620 per year and competitive benefits. It will be based in Missoula, Montana, and funding is available for up to two years of employment. The University of Montana is an ADA/EOE/AA/Veteran’s Preference Employer.

Roles/Responsibilities

  • Development of a survey instrument to understand perceptions and experiences of prescribed fire and wildfire
  • Empirical analysis of the relationship between smoke exposure from different sources and sentiments expressed on social media
  • Evaluation of socio-economic and demographic disparities in exposures to smoke from prescribed fire and wildfire
  • Collaboration with other Smart Fires team members and participation in annual meetings, reporting and training

Eligibility

  • PhD in Economics or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience of excellent research capabilities required to carry out innovative and insightful research.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and summarize relevant literature.
  • Ability to devise and articulate a research plan with defined goals, and design sound empirical strategies.
  • Proven record and ability to produce research to a high publication standard
  • Ability to learn and apply new skills appropriate to conduct necessary research.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts (both orally and in writing) to scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  • Ability and willingness to undertake collaborative research.
  • Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Ability to achieve project goals within time and budget.
  • Strong theoretical and empirical background.
  • Demonstrated experiences and/or knowledge in the following techniques:
    • Processing and analyzing quantitative data using R or Stata statistical software
    • Using econometric methods to estimate causal relationships with observational data

Requirements

  • Experience with survey design and implementation.
  • Knowledge of methods for processing and analyzing spatial data.
  • Familiarity with the academic literatures on wildfire management, use of social media data, and/or social and demographic disparities in environmental exposures
