Delft University of Technology is inviting applications for a passionate and ambitious researcher to join the team and contribute to understanding how climate finance shapes adaptation and how these adaptation measures, in turn, influence social and economic resilience to climate change. This PhD position will focus on climate physical risks, analyzing the effectiveness of various climate finance mechanisms in supporting adaptation, and exploring socio-economic implications of climate adaptation measures at different scales. This project will target regional economic assessments and financial instruments for climate risks for the Dutch context.

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Roles/Responsibilities

  • Quantifying direct and indirect regional damages from climate-induced hazards (with a focus on SLR, and river floods) for the Netherlands, building up on the latest socio-economic and climate scenarios.
  • Quantifying the economic effects of alternative public adaptation strategies for the Netherlands using the the PBL climate risk and adaptation scenarios.
  • Statistical analysis of different private adaptation actions and their effects on the firms gross value added and sales targeting the creation of a ranked matrix of climate adaptation actions for firms by economic sector.
  • Assessing the effectiveness of private climate finance, focusing on private investments in combination with household private adaptation (using actual firms’ data).

Eligibility

  • MSc degree in Economics, Operations Research or Econometrics.
  • Working knowledge of at least one of the modeling software/languages, for example either GAMS, R, Python or Julia.
  • Experience with (statistical) data analysis, ideally using either STATA, R, or Python.

Requirements

  • Domain knowledge in the field of climate policy or damage/risk assessment is an asset.
  • Solid problem-solving skills and capacity to take the initiative.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • Proven written and verbal English communication skills.
