Dr. Fenichel at Yale School of the Environment is inviting applications for a post-doctoral associate to work on a research project titled “Scaling up measurement of natural capital and developing uses of natural capital accounts” and help develop measures of natural capital and the policy use cases for natural capital accounts and other environmental-economic statistics. The position is expected to last 1-2 years.
The individual filling this role will collaborate with faculty to develop original research. Yale has access to many large data sets and cloud computing options, and it is expected that this position will engage with those data resources.
The successful candidate will contribute to research on one or more of the following:
- Approaches to measuring and valuing stocks of natural capital and developing techniques to do so repeatedly and at scale. (e.g., for species, forests, wetlands, soil – exact topics TBD with candidate)
- Links between natural capital/ natural resources and fiscal or monetary policy.
- Finance related to natural capital, including local and county finance.
Eligibility
- PhD with a focus on Natural Resource & Environmental Economics, Economic Measurement, Economics, or closely related areas
- Knowledge of economic dynamics or capital theory
- Strong programming capabilities. Our group is working mostly in R and python these days
- Abilities in econometrics or applied statistics
- Knowledge of, or interest in, ecological and economic systems
- Ability to conduct independent and collaborative research
- Strong English language writing and communication.
Requirements
- Experience with non-market valuation techniques.
- Understanding of national accounts
- Knowledge of municipal finance or public fiscal economics
- High performance or cloud computing experience
- Experience with large data sets, including spatial data, administrative data, and consumer data.
