The Business Economics Group, Wageningen University and Research is inviting applications for a Project, Understanding farmer decision making to reduce risks from pesticides. The PhD student to contribute to their research on effective approaches for mitigating risks to the environment from pesticides in a European context. The successful candidate will investigate pesticide decision-making processes of farmers, with a focus on both individual and collective approaches and their interrelation with other risk management decisions. Additionally, they will investigate the shift of decisions to external units such as environmental cooperatives, pesticides contractors, and other initiatives to coordinate joint pesticide spraying efforts.

The gross salary for the first year is € 2.770 – per month rising to € 3.539,-  in the fourth year in according to the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale P). This is based on a full-time working week of 38 hours.

Roles/Responsibilities

  • Assessing the relationship between farmers’ preferences, their coordination with peers, and their pesticide decisions using behavioural economics
  • Using game theorical concepts to assess strategic interactive decision-making
  • Using econometric techniques to quantify the relation between pesticide and other risk management decisions
  • Proposing policies and new business models for reaching risk reduction targets

Eligibility

  • A MSc degree in Agricultural Economics or related fields with a proven interest in economics
  • Affinity to the European agricultural system
  • Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, STATA) is a strong asset
  • Experience with economic experiments is a strong asset
  • Good analytical and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Fluency in English
