Apply as a PhD Student in Uppsala University

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is inviting applications for a PhD student in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development who can contribute to developing research in any of the following areas:

  • Anglers’ perspective on the quality of fishing and fishing destination in a context of management and socio-economic valuation
  • Anglers’ knowledge and attitudes to prioritized management tools and measures
  • Evaluation of environmental measures and restorations in aquatic environments.

The research results are expected to contribute to the development of recommendations for the future management of recreational fishing and fishing tourism, thereby ensuring socio-economic values ​​and ecosystem services from coastal areas, lakes and rivers. The PhD project will focus on the thematic area “Management and valuation of recreational fisheries”. Recreational fishing, i.e., all fishing that is not commercial, is an important activity both in Sweden and other countries.

Eligibility

  • Hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in Environmental Science/Ecology/Environmental Economics, or
  • Have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • Have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
  • Very good spoken and written English skills are required. 

Requirements

  • An interest for interdisciplinary and applied research
  • Practical experiences of survey and interview methodology as well as data analyses
  • Familiarity with or work experience of recreational fisheries or nature-based tourism
  • Personal qualities such as dedication, motivation, initiative and independence are valuable.
  • Swedish language skills are merits.
