The Department of Business Economics and Public Policy (BEPP) at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, is inviting applications for a pre-doctoral research fellow to support quantitative research in economics. The fellow will work closely with several faculty members, including Professors Susanna Berkouwer, Corinne Low, Arthur van Benthem, and Shing-Yi Wang, covering research in energy and environmental development economics and labor economics. The pre-doctoral fellow will work on topics in energy and the environment for about 50% of their time.

This is a challenging opportunity for an early-career professional who is passionate about social science research and has a strong desire to expand and deepen skills in economic research and quantitative data analysis in anticipation of applying for an economics Ph.D. They will be encouraged to be an active part of the research community, including attending seminars and exploring personal research interests. The BEPP professors will provide supervision and mentorship on academic development more broadly. The research fellow will join an existing cohort of pre-doctoral research analysts. It is a one-year position, with some possibility of extending to two years (contingent upon funding). Salary is in the $45-$55k range.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performing a variety of statistical and econometric analyses
  • Cleaning and analyzing data
  • Writing research reports
  • Conducting background research and literature reviews
  • Identifying and obtaining secondary data
  • Coding survey questionnaires for field activities
  • Preparing research papers and presentations.

Eligibility

  • A bachelor’s degree and 1 to 2 year of research experience (potentially done while completing a Bachelor’s Degree)
  • Experience with statistical analysis in Stata and experience with R is highly valued. A strong background in economics and computer science and familiarity with programs such as Matlab or Python is preferred.
