The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Associate who can help advance ability to communicate statistics, risk, and uncertainty to broader non-specialist audiences with particular emphasis on communication of science, statistics and probabilistic reasoning in the courtroom.
Roles/Responsibilities
- Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct research in the field of communicating statistics.
- Collect and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related fields to analyze the collected data.
- Collaborate with Alda Center faculty and staff to design and trial new curriculum
- Conduct on-the-road workshops and/or teach courses at SBU
- Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant writing.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission, which may include attending scientific conferences and meetings.
Eligibility
- PhD (or foreign equivalent) in hand by 1/1/24 in communication, mass communication, statistics, probabilistic reasoning, bayesian analysis, decision and risk analysis, applied mathematics, or other relevant fields such as social psychology, psychology, sociology, political science, or education.
- Outstanding knowledge of basic and specialized statistics.
- Experience and/or interest in persuasion and message framing.
- Experience conducting workshops or teaching courses.
- Experience communicating statistics to expert and non-expert audiences.
Requirements
- Experience designing and conducting research.
- Experience with the interpretation and evaluation of forensic science.
- High levels of proficiency in qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods social science or educational research. Experience designing new curriculum.
- Experience conducting workshops or teaching courses at the graduate level and/or for experienced STEM professionals.
- Experience conducting workshops nationally and internationally.
- Proficiency in data and project management.
- Experience with grant writing and management of grants.
- Participation in other diversity programs either as an undergraduate or graduate and a commitment to promoting diversity in academia
