The Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine, University of Glasgow is inviting applications for a Research Assistant/Associate to contribute to the project, “Land sharing vs. land sparing: new insights from ecological-economic modeling“, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, working with Professor Nick Hanley, along with a team from the University of Stirling led by Professor Kirsty Park, and Forest Research. This position will be funded for 24 months, starting from January 2022. New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months. Salary will be on the University’s Research and Teaching Grade, level 6/7, £29,176 – £32,817/£35,845 – £40,322 per annum.
The successful candidate will work on the construction of ecological-economic models that enable economic incentives for conservation-orientated farm management to be predicted in terms of biodiversity outcomes. This will involve working closely with another project PDRA, already appointed at the University of Stirling, which is working on ecological modeling of biodiversity indicators at the landscape scale.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project/group/School/College research strategy.
- Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.
- Develop and enhance research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow/School/Research Group, including contributing to publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.
- Contribute to the presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
- Contribute to the identification of potential funding sources and assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.
- Collaborate with colleagues and participate in teams, group meetings, seminars and workshops across the research Groups and wider community.
- Contribute to the organization, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
- Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets.
- Carry out modest Teaching activities (e.g demonstrating etc) and associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with the Principal Investigator.
- Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field.
- Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
- Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.
- Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing the World.
Eligibility
- A1- SCQF Level 10 (Honours degree) in a relevant subject or a cognate discipline, or equivalent.
- A2- Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of the field of environmental or agricultural economics
- A3- A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of economics
- Desirable: B1- An awarded (or recently submitted or near completion) Ph.D. in environmental/agricultural economics or equivalent
- Essential: A4 – Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (Ph.D.) or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a related role(s)
