The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) is inviting applications for a full-time Research Associate to assist with literature review and statistical analyses of commercial fishery landings and seafood market data. The work will span several research projects focused on evaluating the impacts of environmental, regulatory, and socioeconomic changes on fishing behaviors through landings and ex-vessel price data. 

The Research Associate is expected to have strong technical skills with an ability to carry out analytical tasks independently. As needed, the Research Associate may also perform other duties to support the work of Coastal and Marine Economics lab, such as organizing stakeholder and project partner meetings and developing open science framework to curate various research data and outputs. The Research Associate will be provided opportunities to advance their research and other professional skills through mentoring, working in collaboration with peer research staff, and attending and presenting at seminars, research conferences and workshops, and public-facing events. The salary falls within $55,952- $67,079.

Roles/Responsibilities

  • Prepare various commercial fishery landings and seafood market data for the analysis.
  • Support a systematic literature review of soft-shell clam fishery and related products and environmental and socioeconomic drivers of change in fisheries.
  • Implement econometric analyses to examine ex-vessel price volatilities and impacts of environmental and socioeconomic shocks to ex-vessel prices.
  • Support development of research grant proposals.
  • Participate in GMRI staff meetings and activities.

Eligibility

  • Master’s degree (obtained or close to completion) in economics, finance, quantitative social science, data science, or related discipline OR Bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of experience in supporting and conducting statistical or economic analyses.
  • Demonstrated experience and fluency in relevant programming languages and data management system (e.g., R).

Requirements

  • Familiarity with time-series econometrics.
  • Willingness to learn about fisheries and seafood systems. 
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
