The James Hutton Institute is inviting applications for a tenure-track Senior Researcher in Green Finance, for a 3-year fellowship funded by the Macaulay Development Trust (MDT). The selected candidate will analyse the burgeoning initiatives for nature-based investments in Scotland and the UK, critically appraising the consequences for society and nature.

The post is a three year ‘tenure track’ position:  subject to a business case and appropriate performance, the contract will be made open-ended after three years.

Roles/Responsibilities

  • To design and implement a 3-year fellowship project on the topic of green finance, which encompasses all aspects of research, from design, data collection, data analysis through to sharing results.
  • To lead conceptual or theoretical advances related to the role of green finance in environmental governance.
  • To lead high quality academic publications in reputable peer reviewed journals.
  • To maintain and develop relationships with relevant stakeholders in academic policy, private and other sectors, supported by strong oral and written communication skills.
  • To lead proposals for external funding, and over time build a portfolio of income generation.
  • To contribute to the work of the SEGS Department and the James Hutton Institute, including line managing and mentor colleagues where appropriate.

Eligibility

  • PhD or equivalent experience in relevant discipline (e.g., political economy, political ecology, ecological economics, human geography, sociology, environmental finance, organisational studies, law etc.)
  • Established academic reputation and expertise on topics relating to green finance; with a desire to develop insights on delivering multiple benefits for nature and society, and to for justice and equity.
  • Track record of writing articles oriented to policy or business audiences.
  • Expertise in all aspects of delivering theoretically-informed research including data collection and analysis
  • Ability to develop strategies for virtual, face-to-face or online communication that make complex and potentially contentious topics salient and accessible
  • Experience of managing relationships with non-academic stakeholders, including private-sector stakeholders working on finance
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Requirements

  • Knowledge of related concepts and topics in environmental governance, such as natural capital, mainstreaming nature-based solutions, market environmentalism.
  • Track record of publishing academic publications in relevant journals
  • Able to travel occasionally for fieldwork and conferences.
  • Knowledge of the UK and/or Scottish developments and policy context for green finance, reflected by established stakeholder networks.
  • Experience of leading or significantly contributing to large successful funding bids
