Apply as an Academic Specialist in Social Impacts of Wastewater Failure

Job (6)

Application Deadline: August 16, 2023

The Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy in the School of Social Ecology, University of California, Irvine is inviting applications for a full-time academic specialist position focused on advancing modeling of social impacts of wastewater infrastructure failure. Onsite waste treatment systems are an overlooked critical infrastructure that faces growing risks due to sea level rise and extreme weather events. Little is known about the social dimensions of onsite infrastructure or how climate change will impact such systems.

The focus of this research will be on the risks, resilience, and social impacts of wastewater infrastructure failure at a regional scale. The research will have a particular emphasis on understanding the health and well-being implications of failure due to sea level rise and flooding events. The project brings together expertise in economics, climate science, and engineering, through an interdisciplinary team from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of California, Irvine.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and is benefits-eligible. The initial appointment will be for one year with a potential renewal for a second year. Anticipated start date is December 1, 2023 (or earlier or later, based on candidate’s availability). The position can be remote; work location must be in the United States.
