The Howard H. Baker, Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is inviting applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Public Policy and Public Affairs to begin in August 2024. This position is open to three scholars who will contribute primarily to undergraduate and graduate degree programs in public policy. This search is for tenured applicants at the Associate Professor or Full Professor rank with established research and teaching records.
Candidates for Associate Professor should have a demonstrated record of publishing in appropriate journals, exceptional teaching, and internal and external service to their professional community. Candidates who have experience in securing and executing externally funded research are preferred, though this is not a requirement of the position.

The successful candidates will be part of a multidisciplinary hiring initiative to build the new Baker School of Public Policy and Public Affairs, the first such organization at a public institution in the State of Tennessee. We are seeking future colleagues who will help build the School and can contribute fresh ideas, a growth mindset, and interdisciplinary experience. In addition to teaching responsibilities, candidates will be expected to contribute to the research life of the School, which is currently anchored in four active research and engagement centers: the Center for National Security and Foreign Affairs; the Center for Energy, Transportation, and Environmental Policy; the Center for Economic and Community Development; and the Institute of American Civics.
Eligibility
- A PhD in Economics, Political Science, Public Policy, or a related field is required.
- Applicants must also have relevant experience to be hired at the Associate or Full level.
- Candidates must be able to contribute to teaching in a master’s program in public policy, including field courses and core coursework in research methods and statistics, policy analysis and program evaluation, microeconomics, and policy communication; provide service to the university and community; contribute to current research activities; and develop new avenues of research and teaching.
- Degree specializations include energy, transportation, and environmental policy and national security and foreign policy, among others.
- Candidates with teaching and research interests in these areas and in other areas of public economics, political science, and public policy are highly encouraged to apply.
