The University of Regensburg is inviting applications for a post-doctoral position in a research programme titled “Regulatory Instruments in the Real World”, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation with 1 million Euros. The programme will begin in September 2021 at the Chair of Private Law, Corporate Law and Jurisprudence. This research programme aims to conduct experiments and use data-sets to empirically and comparatively analyse the steering effect of different legal instruments -especially with regard to effectiveness, side effects and costs. The reference areas to be investigated are “capital markets and corporations” on the one hand, and the “Verkehrswende” (i.e. the efforts to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions by cars). The full-time position (40.1 hours per week) is limited to 3 years (with an option to extend for a further 3 years).

The chair conducts research in the field of private law, corporate and financial market law and jurisprudence.

  • Legal philosophy
  • Legal theory
  • Economic analysis of law

Roles/Responsibilities

  • Lead collaboration, conception, and implementation of the research programme “Regulatory Instruments in the Real World”.
  • Analysis of public or private data sets using statistical method(primarily linear regression models) in order to gain insights into the effects of different regulatory instruments through “natural experiments”.
  • Analysis and creation of data sets with the help of field experiments and, in particular, lab or online experiments and (in the further course of the research programme) with the use of virtual reality experiments.

Eligibility

  • Practical experience with empirical social science research methods, documented by a doctorate in economics or social-psychology completed with above-average success (magna cum laude or better).
  • Experience with designing experiments and the use of econometric software for data analysis (preferably STATA) and programming software for conducting scientific experiments (e.g. z-tree, OTree, Qualtrics) is an advantage
  • Previous legal knowledge or a degree in law is not required but can be an advantage

Application Details

In order to write a Ph.D. in one of the Chair’s main research areas under the supervision of Professor Hellgardt, the formal requirements of the University’s Ph.D. program must be fulfilled.

 Please note that the thesis must be written in German (exceptions are possible but very limited)
