Penn State’s Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI) is inviting applications for a non-tenure line, full-time Scientific Programmer for Interdisciplinary Climate Research. Successful candidates will become part of a transdisciplinary research team working on Climate Risk Analysis, Multisector Dynamics (https://pches.psu.edu, https://icom.pnnl.gov/), and Stakeholder-Engaged Decision Support (https://midatlanticrisa.org, http://tiny.cc/bsec) under support from sponsors including DOE, NOAA, and NSF. This deeply collaborative research environment provides participants with unique opportunities for research, cross-institution collaboration, and professional development. The selected candidate will work with students, faculty, and postdoctoral researchers across multiple departments and institutions to develop modeling, data processing, visualization, decision analysis, and outreach tools for our integrated research efforts.
Eligibility
- Desired areas of expertise include developing and running the Earth system, integrated assessment, agricultural, ecosystem, and hydrological models and/or their components
- Econometric analysis, geophysical and economic data visualization, model coupling and parallelization, statistical analysis of large datasets, and development of web-based, interactive tools.
- Proficiency in the primary languages used by the team including R, Python, Julia, Matlab, and GAMS;
- Significant experience with model development and data analysis in two or more of these languages is essential.
- Experience working in (or administering ) high-performance Linux supercomputing environments and with additional relevant languages such as C/C++, Fortran, Javascript, or NCL is desirable.
- Experience working with climate model outputs and associated data formats is also highly desirable.
- Initial projects may include (but are not limited to) the development of tools for model coupling, data format translation, multi-objective trade-off analysis, uncertainty quantification, deployment of large model ensembles, containerized workflows, climate downscaling, and web delivery of climatic datasets.

- Applicants seeking the rank of Assistant Research Professor should possess a terminal degree or its equivalent in an academic field related to their research by the start date.
- Applicants without a terminal degree should possess at least a master’s degree or its equivalent in an academic field related to his/her teaching specialization; must have demonstrated ability as a researcher; and must have shown evidence of professional growth and scholarship in their discipline.
