Description
The Wildlife and Conservation Economics Laboratory (WCEL) invites applicants for several funded graduate students (MS.c. and Ph.D.) and postdoc positions. The positions focus on one of the following topics:
- the environmental and economic impact of genetically modified crops or
- the impact of microfinance on deforestation.
We invite applicants from economics, environmental science, or related disciplines. The positions will be supervised by Frederik Noack. The position will be part of the WCEL and the Food and Resource Economics (FRE) Group of the University of British Columbia (UBC). FRE is an active group of environmental, resource, and agricultural economics within the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and with collaborative relationships to the Vancouver School of Economics, the Institute For Resources Environment and Sustainability, and the faculty of Forestry. FRE organizes the UBC Environmental Economics Seminar. Potential candidates can also suggest their own research projects related to conservation, fisheries, or the environmental and economic impacts of land use.
Responsibilities
The successful candidates are expected to contribute to a research project led by the principal investigator and to develop their own innovative research projects related to conservation, fisheries, or the environmental and economic impacts of land use. The successful candidate for the graduate student position is further expected to complete a graduate degree at the University of British Columbia and succeed in graduate-level economics courses.
Qualifications
- Degree in either Economics, Environmental science, or other related fields.
- Good data science skills including econometrics and/or geospatial analysis.
- Proficient in R or other relevant programming languages.
- Ability to work independently, as part of a team and under direction.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to succeed in graduate-level economics classes.
